Windows XP, which is considered as one of the most popular and stable versions of Windows OS, relies heavily on the Graphical User Interface feature to send and receive input from its users. The Windows XP OS offers the user the provision to customize and edit their computer's appearance to suit their tastes. Windows support instructions

  • Start Windows normally.
  • Change the default Windows XP icons.
  • Click on the Start orb placed on the bottom left corner of the home screen. You can also launch the Start menu by pressing the Windows short key imprinted with the Windows logo. Alternatively, you can launch the application by pressing the shortcut key combo Ctrl + Esc. 
  • From the Start menu pop up, select the label that reads My Computer. Instead, you may also use the Windows key plus the E key to launch the File Explorer. 
  • Double-click on your hard drive to open the directory.
  • Now find the program for which you intend to change the icon. For this, you will have to know the location where you have saved the icons on your hard drive. If you do not know the exact location, launch the Start menu. Type the program name in the search space displayed in the Start menu and hit Enter.
  • Your system will now run a search in the hard drive and will launch the program associated with your icon. 
  • Now, right click on the file and from the dropdown, select the label that reads Properties. This will open the Properties menu for the file.
  • Click on the label that reads Change Icon. You will have to create a new desktop icon if you fail to find the Change Icon button. For this, right-click the file and select the label that reads, Send to Desktop.
  • Click on one of the icons that appear in the list. Scroll down the list until you find the icon that you were searching for. If the search result is negative, then click the browse option.
  • Hit the OK button after you have selected the icon. 
  • Hit the Apply button to confirm the changes you have made. Hit Ok to close the Window. 
  • Wait a moment to see the icon change.
