Steps To Troubleshoot Compacting Failed Error

Instructions to resolve Outlook Express problems 

  • Launch the Start menu by clicking the Windows orb placed on the bottom left corner of the home screen. Instead, you may launch the Start menu by pressing the key imprinted with the Windows logo. From the Start pop up, select the label that reads Control panel.
  • Click on the link that reads “Switch to classic view”. This will list down all the applications installed in your computer. 
  • Double click the icon labeled “Add or Remove Programs” and then click the link Add/Remove Windows Components. 
  • This will launch a new Window, from which you can select the programs that you intend to uninstall and reinstall. 
  • Scroll down the window until you find the label that reads the same. Now, click on the Outlook Express label and uncheck the box next to the same. Hit OK to confirm. This will uninstall Outlook Express.
  • Now, go back to the Add/Remove Windows Components window and select the label Outlook Express. Uncheck the box next to Outlook Express and hit OK. This will reinstall Outlook Express.
  • Now launch the browser and navigate to the official Microsoft Download Center website. Place the mouse pointer in the search bar on top and type KB918766 and then hit the drop-down menu arrow to select Search Microsoft.com. Hit the orange button next to the search bar imprinted with a magnifying glass symbol to initiate the search.  
  • Hit the link labeled Update for Outlook Express 6.0 on Microsoft Windows XP (KB918766). This will direct you to the page with the installation file.
  • Now hit the Download button to download the installation file KB918766. Save the Outlook Express update file when it finishes downloading. 
  • Close the browser and navigate to the location where you have saved the downloaded Outlook Express update file. Open the file and hit the OK button when you are asked whether to update. Wait for the process to complete. This may take a minute or two to finish and will depend on the data being processed. 
  • Restart your computer.
